Integrating multiple dimensions of ecological stability into a vulnerability framework

Ecological stability encompasses multiple dimensions of functional and compositional responses to environmental change. Though no single dimension used in isolation can fully reflect the overall response change, a common vulnerability assessment that integrates simultaneously across components is highly desirable for ecological risk assessment. We develop both counterparts novel, integrative metric (OEV). test framework with data from modularized experiment replicated five lakes over two seasons, examining pulse press disturbances three trophic groups. OEV measured as area under curve integrated entire observation period, delimiting difference between disturbance treatment undisturbed parallel controls, expressed either log ratio biomass (functional OEV) or community dissimilarity index (compositional OEV).
